Taking the heat out of global warming

For the first time in history, people shouting “the end is nigh” are somehow
the sane ones, while those of us who say it is not are now the lunatics.

It seems that the press release has been read carefully by the folk at Hot Topic.

Professor Keith Hunter, with the scholarly precision appropriate for a NZ Royal Society Vice- President, has pronounced it to be “bullshit”.

The CCG must now rise to the challenge of matching this impressive level of scintillating repartee.

Not entirely sure that the BS comment was aimed at the press release, rather perhaps one of the commenters.

However, the learned gentleman and the reference to bovine excrement are well indexed by Google now

Ho, ho, ho! What a challenge. This is the Hunter who said just four months ago:

I am hugely comforted by the letters and phone calls of support I have received today. Maybe finally the mainstream scientists of this country are waking up to what the NZC*S*C is trying to do. Let there be no doubt – this is another attack on integrity [sic] of the science system. We defeated this when the Nazis did it, we defeated it when the Soviets did it, and we will continue to defeat it! And in case you think it [sic], let me remind you – all it takes for scientific untruths to survive is for honest men and women to ignore them.

On that occasion he overlooked the fact that whatever is ignored does in fact go away.

Still, his desire for drama overwhelms his grasp of the truth.

It baffles me that someone of Prof Hunters tenure is seen posting at such an overtly political site as HT. Maybe he doesn’t see it that way.

Reality mocks models

models v. reality
Latest climate models v. reality

As the models continue to leave actual temperature readings in their dust, sizeable warming halted about 1995 — although it might resume at any time. It must hasten to have any hope of catching up with the predictions.

If you claim warming continues, we want evidence of continued warming — eminently reasonable. Making us wait for 17 years for that evidence invites us to doubt you.

Claiming that warming hasn't stopped is the same as claiming it has — and both are ridiculous, for nobody knows the future. The best you can do is describe the past.

Hot spot fails reality check

IPCC fingerprint
GHG fingerprint missing

About 2000, climate scientists predicted, and the IPCC agreed, that, if the global temperature was strongly influenced by carbon dioxide (or GHG generally), there'd be a unique "fingerprint" publicising that influence high over the tropics — a tropospheric hot spot. So they started looking for it — and they haven't given up.
