Well, I’m gobsmacked!
I’ve received a report that Hone Harawira has a redeeming feature.
It would seem that, among his many sins, he doesn’t believe in Global Warming, according to TV3 News this evening.
Well done, him; seems he’s not such a bad egg after all!
As the models continue to leave actual temperature readings in their dust, sizeable warming halted about 1995 — although it might resume at any time. It must hasten to have any hope of catching up with the predictions.
If you claim warming continues, we want evidence of continued warming — eminently reasonable. Making us wait for 17 years for that evidence invites us to doubt you.
Claiming that warming hasn't stopped is the same as claiming it has — and both are ridiculous, for nobody knows the future. The best you can do is describe the past.

Hone is in many ways the archetypal heretic, so it maybe comes as no surprise that he doesn’t toe the party line on climate change.

Right now he might be able to put his imaginary climate change in perspective in view of ChCh – but I doubt it.

I managed to evacuate my family to south canterbury this morning. Christchurch is a real mess, but we, at least, are all glad to be safe and unharmed. Not so for everyone, sadly

Update, $20bn. Climate change is nothing in comparison. An earthquake did $20bn damage in 1 minute and people are worried about something that MIGHT happen over the rest of the century. Time for some perspective.
The long term economic damage to the country from the quake hasn’t even started yet. Many people won’t be coming back to ChCh after this.
For some real perspective, last time carbon dioxide levels were at current levels, sea level was between 3 and 5 metres higher than now. That would permanently flood all the liquefaction prone parts of Christchurch, most of the tsunami hit area of Japan, and every other port and estuary. That makes a few years devastation to small regions look completely insignificant in comparison. That’s what we can expect without adding any more greenhouse gases, and without considering some other effects that could be even more serious.
Are you saying that the present levels of CO2 will lead to sea level rising to between 3 and 5 metres higher than present? If you’re serious, do you have a reference for that proposition?
Thanks, you’ve just disproved any link between CO2 levels and sea level. If there was a link, much of the surrounding neighbourhood where I live would be under water right now.
