Climate change is real, it’s happening and it’s alarming.

We need billions of dollars for lot’s of overseas travel to lavish conferences at exotic locations. We have to stop driving our cars and start walking everywhere (except me of course – I prefer to fly) and we must move to uneconomic energy sources now or the planet is domed.

We need millions of dollars for climate science to preserve our societal status.

I know this is slightly OT, but my landlord here in London is a very entertaining Scotsman, a forensic accountant by profession who once owned an IT business and has now retired to his farm somewhere in Portugal. His take on the Spanish and Portugese economies is that most actual paying jobs in those countries are done ‘off the books’ and for cash in a plain brown paper bag, which translates as very few people actually paying anything significant in tax of any kind. The ramifications are that the Latin Eurozone countries are in deep manure and Dave Cameron and his merry band are quite happy to bail the silly sods out.

The green energy initiatives in Spain have been hugely counterproductive, but it must be recognised that the Latin habit of gentle and almost universal corruption has exacerbated everything that is illogical and silly about said green energy and jobs. The stories about the entrepreneurial solar farmers who hooked up cheap little diesel generators to pump subsidy-gaining electrons into their national grids during the hours of darkness really appealed to my sense of humour.

Not all Latins are tarred with the same brush, though. I was fascinated to watch the ‘Financial Police’, driving branded Fiat Punto squad cars and carrying very ostentatious and serious shooters, interrogate a very nervous coffee-house owner in a village in Chiantishire over missing cash register reciepts for lattes, etc. We were told that the Mafia leans on small retail business to launder large tranches of cash and the Financial Police flying squads are one weapon in the war against organised crime. While the Italians regard telling jokes about the stupidity of the Carabinieri behind their backs as a national sport, I never saw anything but very serious deference toward Carabinieri in the flesh. I was frisked by one at an airport in Rome when my wristwatch set off a security alarm; I took him and his Uzi very seriously indeed.
